CHS sophomores participated in their school's annual Holocaust Day event. This year's speaker was Ine Van Dam with the Holocaust Center for Humanity. Ine's mother, Ada, was born in Holland and survived internment at Auschwitz. She shared her mother's story, including video interviews with Ada, with students.
Ada's father had made arrangements for his family to escape Holland during the war, but the family was betrayed. At Auschwitz, Ada was assigned to a facility processing laundry for Nazis. She worked and lived with a group of women in the building. Ada was sent on a death march from Auschwitz to the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp, where she was eventually liberated by the Soviet Army before being sent to Sweden to recover.
Students also watched the movie Schindler's List which tells the story of a German business man who helped save many in Poland who may otherwise have been killed in concentration camps.
CHS' Holocaust Day was organized to educate students about the reality of the impact the Holocaust had and continues to have in our world. Speakers have included survivors and their family members who have been able to share their personal stories. Ine lives in Centralia, giving the Holocaust a local impact for students.
Thank you to Centralia Community Church of God for hosting this year's event while our classitorium is out of commission during construction!
