FFA Finds Success at State Convention

Thirty two members of Centralia High School’s FFA chapter participated in the state convention in Pullman from May 11-13. Centralia’s FFA chapter officers placed 8th out of 266 in the national Chapter Award Program, earning a trip to the national competition next fall.

Hannah Beckwith, Sadie Kassel, Keaton Meek, and Chloe Vedder earned State FFA Degrees. Keaton Meek was honored as a State Star of Placement as the District III Star. The Forestry Team earned 2nd place with Sadie Kassel 7th High individual, Tristian Hinkley 6th, and Tim Sheets 5th. Chapter members Tim Sheets, Sawyer Kassel, and Tristian Hinkley won 2nd place with a Chapter Display in the Hall of Chapters. Madi Geist placed as 2nd high individual in Livestock Evaluation.

Earlier this spring, the chapter hosted Centralia’s first grade students and gave them an introduction to the agriculture program. That work earned the chapter a 10th place finish in the FARM presentation.

Centralia’s team members competed in Junior Parliamentary Procedure, Creed, Prepared Public Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Food Science (made finals which means top 20 out of 50 teams), Milk Quality, Farm Business, Talent, first Year Greenhand, Livestock Evaluation (made finals), Environmental Science/Natural Resources Career Development Event.

Kendra Meek, Centralia’s sole FFA advisor, expressed pride for her chapter. “Wins are when I witness students working together to better each other, listening to a student sharing their goals for next year, and watching students who have been scared of their own shadow get up and speak in front of an audience. Every student on this trip competed in events that required them to speak in front of audiences of a variety of sizes.”

More than 3,000 FFA members from across the state participated in the convention.
