Over the past ten years, Student-Led conferences at CMS have been highly successful. CMS’s parents have been highly engaged with student led conferences. Specifically, CMS has averaged over 80% of parents being involved with conferences.
Essentially, the purpose of the student-led conferences is to ensure that all students are participating in an accelerated learning plan. Accelerated learning plans may be developed as part of an existing student achievement plan process such as student plans for achieving state high school graduation standards, individual student academic plans, or the achievement plans for groups of students.
Included in these student learning plans are: (1) Achievement goals for students in the content area(s) served; (2) Roles for the student(s), parents, or guardians and teachers in the plan; (3) Communication procedures used to inform parents or guardians, and teachers of a student's accomplishments and progress toward achieving goals; and (4) Evidence of the accelerated student learning plan review and adjustment processes.
In addition to all students participating in the student learning plans, the purpose of the student-led conferences is to meet the obligation of participation in a Title-1 Compact. Specifically, section 1118(d) of No Child Left Behind requires each school receiving Title I, Part A to develop with, and distribute to, parents a compact. The compact is a tool to encourage parents to work in partnership with school personnel to help their children improve academic achievement and proficiency on state and district assessments. After conducting the October student-led conference, the goals are reviewed during the final week of January and March as a progress monitoring check-in point. During the March conferences, parents are involved in the final review. As stated above, this final conference meets the need of Section 4 of WAC 392-162-034 Evidence of the accelerated student learning plan review and adjustment processes.
